Russia is planning to lay down its fourth Project 12700 (Aleksandrit-class) coastal minesweeper in April, announced by the Russian Navy on 28 March. The first vessel of the class, Aleksandr Obukhov, has been commissioned on 9 December, 2016. The second and third vessels are still under construction. Russian Navy placed an onder for seven more Aleksandrit-class minesweepers in December and plans to commission a total of 40 vessels.
The ships of project 12700 Alexandrit are a new generation of mine sweepers. Their fiberglass hull considerably decreases the weight and extends the life cycle.
