Slovakia to Buy Radar from Israel

The Slovak Government has decided to purchase 17 3D multi-mission radar (MMR) systems from Israel’s Aerospace Industries (IAI), according to the Israeli Defence Ministry.

ELM 2084 MMR systems are capable of simultaneously detecting and diagnosing 1,100 air targets within a 250-kilometer radius. The radars are also used in Israel’s ‘Iron Dome’ air defence systems.

Slovakia’s Defence Ministry announced in 2019 that talks would be held with France, the United States and Israel to purchase 17 radars worth 155 million euros. Before this decision, it was announced that 13 countries, including Czech Republic, Britain, Poland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey, had submitted bids.

The cost of radar equipment is expected to cost a total of 148.2 million euros.

It was underlined that the contract would include technology and information transfer, as well as industrial cooperation.

Slovakia’s new radars will replace 24 systems that reached the end of their lifespan in 2016.
