December 7, 2022Korea Opens Diplomatic Mission in NATO
The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Belgium, Yoon Soongu, met with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg 22 November at NATO Headquarters at an official ceremony celebrating the establishment of the NATO Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Korea.
This meeting took place after the North Atlantic Council agreed in September on the decision to designate the Republic of Korea’s Embassy in Belgium as the country’s NATO Mission.
The Republic of Korea is an active partner of NATO. NATO and Seoul have developed a strong partnership based on shared values since 2005. In joint activities and cooperation in areas such as non-proliferation, cyber defence, counter-terrorism, security-related civil science projects, interoperability, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence and civil preparedness, resilience and disaster relief.
NATO’s New Strategic Concept, approved at the NATO Summit in Madrid in June, highlights the importance of the Indo-Pacific region for NATO. It also highlights the importance of strengthening relations and cooperation with partners in the Indo-Pacific to overcome the common security interests of Allied leaders.
