The US Air Force (USAF) Global Strike Command will carry out an operational test launch of an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile on 26 April from north Vandenberg Air Force Base. The purpose of the ICBM test launch program is to validate and verify the effectiveness, readiness, and accuracy of the weapon system. A senior USAF officer stated that the Minuteman launches were essential to verify the status of the US national nuclear force and to demonstrate the country's nuclear capabilities.
