The 4×4 Tactical Wheeled Armoured Vehicle, used in Turkey’s border protection, will be exported to Kenya.
Kenyan Defence Forces Spokesman Colonel Zipporah Kioko announced that they will buy 118 armoured personnel carriers from Turkey to fight al-Shabaab militias in Somalia. Kioko noted that the agreement is nearing completion and that armoured vehicles have become a fundamental need for Kenya.
According to The Star newspaper, three companies applied for the tender, but only Katmerciler’s HIZIR met the user specification. The other two companies were from South Africa and North America.
The country’s current fleet has Puma M26-15, WMZ 551BSI, Mamba MK5, Bastion and CS/VP 14s commissioned between 2010 and 2019. But many of these tools have become cannot meet changing security needs.
HIZIR’s “V” type monocoque body is highly resistant to mines and homemade explosives, increasing the crew’s ability to fight back. In accordance with the needs of the user, the vehicle can be equipped with ASELSAN production SARP remote controlled gun tower.
The amount of the deal was said to be about $70 million.
