October 17, 2018Greece Requests Surplus Amphibious Vehicles, AAV-7A1
Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos asked US armoured amphibious vehicles according to Greekpoint defence publication. Greekpoint claims that Kammenos’ visit to Defence Secretary James Matis in the Pentagon gave opportunity to request surplus US vehicles.
Greece wants granted amphibious armoured vehicles in order to replace the obsolete and operationally inadequate dump-free (ABAK) vehicles currently used by the 32 Marine Brigade.
The choices currently available are practically limited to the ageing AAV-7A1, which are used by the US Marines. The age-related concerns of the AAV-7A1 are well-founded as they have been in service since 1972, that is 46 years ago, and despite successive upgrades, they are at the end of their service life.
