Game Changing Polymer by NRL

The US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has developed a new class of polymer which will enable the composite materials to withstand very high temperatures and self-extinguish, maintaining structural integrity in a fire. A research chemist at NRL told Jane's that the new polymer is a second generation phthalonitriles which are also resistant to chemicals, helping avoid damages by the oils and gasses present in an engine room. Another benefit of the material is that it does not emit a lot of vapours when it burns, protecting the personnel from excessive inhalation. NRL official emphasizes that usage of such material would be a game changer especially for submarine applications.
