First Flight of Mi-8MTV5-1

Russia made the first training flight of the new Mi-8MTV5-1 utility helicopter, which was modernized at its military base in Tajikistan. Equipped with an advanced navigation system for aerial defence systems, the Cockpit of the Mi-8MTV5-1 used lighting equipment suitable for the use of night vision goggles. Thus, the helicopter's day and night operations were operationalized to fly at low altitude and to take off and land in unmarked areas.

Launched in Tajikistan in early September 2020, the helicopters have a VK-2500 turboshaft engine. The platforms are equipped with unguided C8 missiles and a 23 mm ball.

In July 2020, Russia commissioned two Mi-8MTV5-1 helicopters at the Kant military base in Kyrgyzstan.

The military base in Tajikistan is seen as the largest military facility outside Russia's borders. The Russian armed forces' stay in Tajikistan has been extended until 2042.
