US Navy’s new generation aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford’s (CVN78) new air operation and flight deck systems have tested last friday. During the trials, ships next generation electromagnetic launch system (EMALS), advanced arresting gear (AAG) and other flight deck systems have been tested. A fixed-wing aircraft has landed and launched during tests at offshore coasts of Norfolk Naval Station.
The success of the next generation electromagnetic catapult and arrest system which encountered many problems in the development process is milestone for Navy. An EMALS which developed for Gerald R. Ford class carriers has less weight, more compact, requires less personnel and it can launch aircrafts quicker than the its steam-powered predecessors.
