Russia has carried out live-firing tests with Tor-M2 (NATO reporting name: SA-15 Gauntlet) short range missile defence system in southern Astrakhan region, according to Russian Defence Ministry announcement on Friday. Developed by Almaz-Antey based on Tor-M1 system, Tor-M2 was designed to counter a wide range of targets including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), guided missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, helicopters and high-precision weapons flying at very low to medium altitudes.
Tor-M2 defence system are produced in three variants; armed with the 9M331 interceptor, the export variant, Tor-M2E, is based on a tracked chassis and made its first public debut during the Moscow Air Show, MAKS 2007. The second variant, designated as Tor-M2K is based on a wheeled chassis. Tor-M2KM SAM variant can use both tracked and wheeled chassis and is designed to simultaneously destroy four aerial targets. The Tor-M2 missile system can operate 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions. The Tor-M2E missile system has been exported to Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine, China, Venezuela and Iran.
