Russia's Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile systems have been deployed to Tajikistan for the first time for the joint Dushanbe-Anti-Terror 2017 drills that will begin on 30 May and include armored vehicles, artillery, and aviation. Organized by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the drills will see the military launch a missile to a camp of simulated terrorists based in the mountains. The missile systems follow four Su-24M tactical bombers, which were deployed to Tajikistan earlier in the month.

The Iskander-M missile system has been in service since 2007 and has a range of up to 500 km. It can be equipped to carry a variety of warheads types, including a high explosives (HE) variant, sub-munition dispenser variant, fuel-air explosive variant and a HE penetrator variant.
