Ethiopian Airlines signs up for 11 Airbus A350s

Ethiopian Airlines pledged to buy 11 wide-bodied Airbus planes at the Dubai Airshow on Wednesday, further expanding its order book a day after purchasing 31 Boeing aircraft. The Ethiopian flag-carrier signed a memorandum of understanding for 11 Airbus A350-900s, which can serve routes ranging from short-haul to ultra-long-haul, taking its total A350 commitment to 33. Boeing, Airbus’s US rival, has dominated the orders at the week-long show so far, including a deal to supply 95 planes to Dubai’s Emirates airline. “We are particularly excited for this fleet as it offers extra comfort to passengers,” Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said in a statement. “We are keen to expand our fleet size, acquiring the latest technology aircraft,” he added. On Tuesday, the carrier ordered 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 20 737 MAX planes — four-and-a-half years after an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX crashed just after take-off from Addis Adaba, killing all 157 passengers and crew.
