BAE Systems has signed a major modernization contract for the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke–class guided-missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98). The critical project, which could reach a total value of 139 million dollars, aims to extend the vessel’s service life and enhance its effectiveness within the fleet.
The U.S. Navy selected BAE Systems to overhaul the Arleigh Burke–class destroyer as part of the ship’s Depot Modernization Period (DMP). The initial phase of the contract is valued at 123 million dollars and could increase to 139 million dollars if all options are exercised.
Scope and Timeline of the Modernization
The modernization work will begin in February 2026 at BAE Systems’ Norfolk shipyard. The critical activities to be carried out on the 9,200-ton USS Forrest Sherman include:
- Hull Protection: Underwater hull preservation work.
- Machinery: Comprehensive refurbishment of the ship’s engineering spaces.
- Systems: Upgrades to command-and-control equipment.
- Living Quarters: Renewal of crew living spaces.
The DMP work is expected to be completed in early 2027.
Ensuring Long-Term Service
David M. Thomas, Jr., Vice President of BAE Systems Maritime Solutions Norfolk, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “This modernization will ensure that Forrest Sherman can continue to deliver a high level of service in the fleet for many years to come.”
USS Forrest Sherman, the 48th ship of the Arleigh Burke class, entered service in January 2006. BAE Systems recently completed similar work on the destroyer USS Nitze (DDG 94) and continues to play a key role in the maintenance and modernization of the U.S. Navy’s combat vessel fleet
