US Navy Collaborates with Qualcomm

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and wireless communications specialist Qualcomm Technologies have signed a joint research agreement to explore 5G, artificial intelligence and cloud computing, priorities for the US Department of Defense.

The collaboration, announced yesterday, aims to inform the Navy and Marine Corps’ digital pursuits, while also connecting school faculty and students with leading scientists and engineers from the private sector.

“This collaboration between NPS and Qualcomm Technologies is a great opportunity for our cadets and defence faculty to experiment with the latest 5G-enabled technologies and collaboratively explore innovative solutions to the challenges our Navy and Marines are facing,” said Retired Vice Admiral Ann Rondeau, Head of School. “

The partnership is facilitated by what is known as the cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA), which allows the American government to cooperate with non-federal organizations.

Also, the focus areas of the newly announced agreement reflect the military’s goal of spending billions of dollars on seamless connectivity and computer-assisted decision making.

According to Aaron Weis, the Navy’s Chief Information Officer, the Navy creates a culture that fosters innovation and enhances our competitive advantage.

Regarding the NPS-Qualcomm partnership, Weis said it will “identify promising new commercial technologies so we can quickly adopt them for full-scale implementation.” Terms of the joint research agreement include establishing an innovation lab on the campus of the Naval Postgraduate School in California.
