Under new National Shipbuilding Strategy the UK will acquire five Type 31e general purpose frigates, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has revealed.
Apart from enhancing the Navy's capabilities, the new strategy intends to bolster UK maritime industry as well as maximizing exports. The vessels are expected to be constructed in sections by different shipyards across the country and will be finally assembled at a central hub.
The first Type 31e ships are planned to enter service by 2023.
