Taiwan showcased its own-manufactured drone last Tuesday amid ongoing tensions over claims over China’s self-governing island republic.

The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, which develops military technology, drew attention to the Chien Hsiang unmanned aerial vehicle, which is designed to destroy enemy radars. The drone soared during a demonstration for media members at the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology in Taichung, central Taiwan, on Tuesday, 15^th November 2022.

Chi Li-ping, Director of the Institute’s Aviation Systems Research Department, emphasized the importance that every self-confident country will produce strategies and defence technologies, and said that UAVs are the trend of the future. Chi concluded his words: “This is why we are doing research on this issue and determining some strategies.”

The Taiwanese army began taking delivery of the first of a hundred helicopter drones it ordered from the institute last month. Chi stressed the importance of unmanned aerial vehicles in transferring images to the military’s command and communication systems for analysis and transmission to combat units. Taiwan also developed the Teng Yun, which is similar to the American MQ-9 Reaper drone and can stay in the air for up to 24 hours.

China, on the other hand, increased its military threat to Taiwan in August in response to the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island. It is a question of whether there will be a response to Taiwan’s move from China, which launches missiles over the island and conducts live-fire military exercises in six self-proclaimed regions, which seems to be a rehearsal for a possible blockade and occupation.
