Rheinmetall successfully showcased its capabilities developed against small unmanned aerial systems (c-sUAS) at the Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) Demo Days held in Finland. The tests, conducted under harsh climatic conditions, focused on the detection and destruction of a wide range of threats, from jet drones to micro quadcopters.
Uninterrupted Early Warning with Skyspotter
The Skyspotter system, which was at the center of the presentation, tracked threats in the airspace by classifying them through its multi-sensor structure. Introduced in a rapidly deployable version integrated onto a Rheinmetall HX truck, the system allows the integration of different sensor and weapon systems thanks to its open architecture.
Kinetic Destruction: 30 mm Revolver Cannon and KETF
In the system, which offers the ability to engage drone threats from a safe distance, the following options stood out as effectors:
- Electronic Warfare: Jammer (interference) integration.
- Kinetic Solution: A concept-stage 30 mm revolver cannon and programmable KETF (fragmentation) ammunition.
Rheinmetall Electronic Solutions Division Head Oliver Dürr stated that the cooperation with the Finnish Defence Forces and local partner Oy Telva proved the system’s performance under realistic conditions.
