Technological advances provide armies long range precision strike capability from portable weapons. This increases the need for long-range artillery systems.

Raytheon Missiles and Defence continues its work on the US Army's XM1155 Extended-Range Artillery Projectile (ERAP) project. As part of the process initiated by the force's ERCA (Extended Range Cannon Artillery) Program, the company will develop a ramjet powered artillery round. Having signed a similar agreement with Boeing and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems for Phase 1, the USA will make its final decision after the test and evaluation process.

155mm XM1155 ramjet artillery ammunition to be developed within the project will also be able to engage in moving targets. The target range for the system, which is stated to be engaged all targets on land and sea even on moving ones, is 100 km.
