NATO Deputy General Secretary: Working Together on New Technologies for a More Peaceful Future

The “NATO Annual Data and AI Leaders” Conference brought together high-level representatives from allied countries, industry and NATO organizations to share best practices and develop joint solutions.

NATO Deputy General Secretary Mircea Geoana made statements at the “NATO’s Annual Data and Artificial Intelligence Leaders” conference held in Brussels on 8th November 2022. The message that stood out in Geoana’s speech was: “Today’s new technologies are changing the way wars are waged and won. We all have a role to play to ensure our safety in a more dangerous and competitive world.”

Putting sound principles of responsible use at the centre of its approach, NATO works to safely and securely accelerate the adoption of new and disruptive technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence. In addition, NATO launched two initiatives, one is the Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic / DIANA to support the latest dual-use technologies that can help solve security challenges such as big data and artificial intelligence, and the other one is NATO Innovation Fund worth one billion Euros.

At the conference hosted by Belgium, the Deputy General Secretary, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Philippe Lavigne, and senior data and artificial intelligence officials from Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States also delivered keynote speeches. The conference also featured a marketplace where the latest NATO and allied innovations in artificial intelligence and data were showcased.
