India Commissioned 3rd ASW Corvette

The Indian Navy commissioned its third anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kiltan in a ceremony at Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam, on 16 October. INS Kiltan is the third of four Kamorta-class (Project 28) ASW corvettes and built indigenously by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited.

The first two of the class, INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt, were commissioned in 2014 and 2016 respectively. The fourth corvette, INS Kavaratti, is under construction and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017.

Project 28 corvettes displace 3300 tonnes, are 109 meters in length and achieve speeds in excess of 25 knots, propelled by four diesel engines. The corvettes are currently equipped with a 76 mm naval gun, and a 16-cell vertical launching system (VLS) that is capable of deploying Barak 1 surface-to-air missiles, four heavyweight torpedo tube launchers, two RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers and a pair of AK-630M close-in weapon system (CIWS).
