Australia has taken delivery of the first Aegis-equipped Hobart-class air warfare destroyers (AWDs) in a ceremony held at the Osborne Naval Shipyard on 16 June. The vessel, HMAS Hobart (DDG 39), will transit to Sydney in the next months where it will be officially commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The vessel was laid down in September 2012 and launched in May 2015. HMAS Hobart is the first Aegis-equipped ship to be delivered to Australia.
The Australian Ministry of Defence has a total of three vessels on order. The second ship of the class, HMAS Brisbane, is expected to be handed over in September 2018.
Hobart-class vessels has a length of 146,7 meters and displaces 6 thousand 360 tonnes.
