Boeing’s High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapon Capability (HAAWC) met all requirements for the US Navy’s first operational capability status.
HAAWC, which can be used in all weather conditions, enables the Boeing P-8A Poseidon to deploy MK 54 torpedoes near or below cruising altitude.
Program Manager Dewayne Donley said: “The first operational capability milestone marks HAAWC’s readiness for fleet introduction for the Navy and its international partners. We are excited to offer greater flexibility and capability through higher altitude launch over longer distances than previously possible.”
HAAWC consists of a modular guidance kit that integrates the MK 54 torpedo into a precision-guided gliding weapon.
“This is a major achievement for our team in achieving our goal of breaking new ground in anti-submarine warfare. We look forward to continuing to work with the Navy on the full deployment and operational capability of the system” said Bob Ciesla, Boeing Vice President of Arms.
The P-8A Poseidon has spent more than 450.000 accident-free flight hours to date in humanitarian and search and rescue missions in support of large-area, maritime and coastal operations.
