Greece is preparing to purchase the Israel-made LORA ballistic missile system. This procurement and urgent delivery decision, providing a precision strike range of approximately 430 kilometers, serves as a response to the Turkish Armed Forces’ efforts on domestically produced precision ballistic missiles.
According to a December 4, 2025 report by the Greek news agency BankingNews, LORA (Long-Range Artillery Missile) precision ballistic missiles from Israel will be added to the inventory of the Greek Armed Forces.
A Response to Türkiye’s Tayfun Initiative
This procurement decision is considered a direct answer to the Turkish Armed Forces’ work on the design, development, and operational integration of precision ballistic missiles.
Athens’ Rationale: According to the report, Tayfun is becoming an increasing threat for Greece and its islands. This situation makes it necessary for Athens to possess equivalent or superior ballistic capabilities.
Turkish Missile Capabilities: In recent years, Türkiye has developed numerous precision systems. In this context, the Tayfun short- and medium-range ballistic missiles are currently in mass production and have been made operational for use by the Turkish land forces.
Deployment Plan for the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean
The operational use of the LORA systems will not be limited solely to the Greek Air Force. These missiles are also planned to be used by the Greek land forces, which will deploy them on key islands in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. This strategic deployment marks a new phase in the two countries’ search for a regional balance of power
