“Mare Nostrum” Our Sea Imagination from Greece

A remarkable article was published in Ptisi & Diastima Magazine, which publicates in the defence sector in Greece. Greek-Turkish relations, which increasing tension due to oil and natural gas deposits in Eastern Mediterranean and Turkey-Libya mutual exclusive economic zone were discussed in the article. Outlines of the offensive plan that could be implemented in a possible conflict were examined in the text. Turkey's radar and electronic support capabilities, as well as Greece's SEAD (Surpression of the Enemy Air Defence) power considered in the study, which featured Israeli product weapon systems for Greece against Turkey and expressed the need for IAI Harop loitering munitions.

In addition to the Greece's economic and military situation, Turkey's increasing radar, electronic warfare and UAV capabilities also summarised in the study. Contents also includes the possible attack of Greek forces upon Anatolia and possible military movement of Turkish Forces against ASDEN (ΑΣΔΕΝ). ASDEN's mission in the region was stated to be the defence of the islands against Turkish assault, withthe troops deployed on many islands which are in the division to brigade level. This statement is also a confession of the militarisation of Aegean Islands, which should have been demilitarized according to the international Lausanne Peace Treaty. Although the issue of static troops stationed in the Aegean cannot involve to the defence of other islands in the area, the doctrines that shifted from the regional defence to the area defence makes these lines being written only for Harop propaganda.

As well as the increasing UAV capability of Turkey, S-400 procurement, ship modernisation and the acquisition of new radar and electronic warfare systems also emphasized. It is also discussed that the resistance capability of Greece. While referring to the missions performed by UAVs in Saudi Arabia and the MIM-104 Patriot air defence systems that are likely to be deployed in the region for the protection of oil wells, the country's SEAD power was also addressed. It was pointed out that the use of a small number of AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles, which are considered as “scandalous numbers”, and a relatively large amount of SCALP cruise missiles, which are in the country's inventory, may be limited due to high cost. In this section, it was discussed that the Harop loitering ammunition to be procured from Israel could perform SEAD missions and be a good solution for the Turkish Navy's radars, which must be blinded. It was emphasized that otherwise a situation could drag the Greek side into disaster. In addition, it was also discussed that mobile and long-range systems such as Israeli origin Spike NLOS and MBRL systems will be support for the defence network and an invaluable solution for firing behind the Turkish lines.

In addition to the radar homing system, the Harop offers effective use against surface targets thanks to the FLIR-based electro-optical seeker, were also used in ground attack missions in operationally. System procurements such as Harop and Spike NLOS of Greece, which are not economically sobering, are a matter of debate whether it will be a step for the dreams of “Mare Nostrum” (Our Sea) in the Aegean.
