Japan is to deploy its first F-35 aircraft to Misawa base later this month. Japan Air Self-Defence Force plans to deploy 9 out of 42 aircraft contracted for the service by the end of 2018. The advanced aircraft is Japan's next-generation mainstay fighter under a Defence Ministry plan.
