Studies on air defence systems progressing in different dimensions within the framework of changing threats.
Serbia, which has a well established defence industry which is legacy of Yugoslavia, continues its domestic production system studies. In this context, test launch activity was carried out with modernised RLN-IC / 170 missiles, which produced under Russian license. In the trials carried out in the Pasuljanske Livade Training Area, missiles mounted on PASARS FM-1 vehicles were launched to the thermal target, which is a 120 mm mortar illumination round. In this way, infrared guidance systems of missiles were tested. Officials participating in the tests from the Serbian Ministry of Defence signalled that RLN-IC / 170-II missiles could be developed.
It was determined that the parameters of the Vympel production K-13 (R-13) (NATO Code: AA-2 Atoll), a model of the air-to-air missiles produced under license and land-based model, changed as a result of modernization. The missile, whose outer diameter expanded, was equipped with a larger rocket motor. In addition, the infrared (IR) guidance system of the missile was improved. Also, in addition to the digital control system, a larger warhead equipped with an proximity fuse was added to the projectile. It was emphasized that such systems, like rocket engines, were produced with domestic facilities.
The launch was made from PASARS FM-2s, the third generation version of PASARS-16 systems. Developed to replace the 9K35M Strela-10M low altitude air defence systems in its inventory, the vehicle consists of a 40 mm Bofors L70 cannon stationed on the FAP 2026BS / AV 6×6 truck and four missile launchers. PASARS FM-2, besides its usage as a battery, can also work as a detached when necessary.
